TB,
an example of Photoshop's .ACT file
In Jack, open up level3a(Lost Valley)
save the .bmp as Lost8.bmp
in Photoshop, open this Lost8.bmp file
go to the top bar where is says..."image" click it;
this starts a drop down menu, follow these:
click "mode", then click "color table",
it'll show you a cluster of the 256 colors used.
at the bottom of the color table, click "save"..
You'll be saving these *unique* 256 colors(or however
many,I don't give a rat's ass;it's
not 24/32 bit;that's all I need to know)
So, I save the color palette as Lost8.ACT
it's an .ACT file extentsion, that's all...
How do you use this Lost8.Act file later?
say you wanted to add textures to level3a.bmp..
You'd do this in 24 bit(better features)
so, convert the level3a.bmp to RGB mode by
selecting; (on top bar of PSD)...
"image", then "mode", then "RGB"
I'd name this as Lost24.bmp &
use the layers, airbrush,
& "set selection box size to... ( 64 X 64 yep!)
and the "snap to grid?" feature, YEP!("I got you in ma'
sights, babe!")ma' aim IS true!heh heh...
to paintover or add to this;all great Photoshop features.
When done,I save this as the Photoshop .PSD
file format...ok, it's big and a MB hawg, but...
it does save all of the layers(very important!)
next, "flatten layers" and get ready to save as another file,
a 8bit .bmp...
So, go back to "image", then "mode" ,select "indexed color"...
You'll get a box that usually says "exact" in the palette.
Nope, you want "custom"...and, you can experiment w/ this one, but, I've found
that NO dither looks best w/ TombRaider(TR1) .bmps..
so, dither="none" not, "difussion" (which sucks, politely put...)
next, hit the "load" button & start looking for your
Lost8.ACT file...(it will always be a "custom" file...)
it's the jewel that faithfully
converts your 24 bit RGB .bmp back to the level's true colors...
confused yet? don't be; confuse someone else...
Sorry for the long-winded explaination,
hope it helps,
Kev
: just aquestion. I´ve tried several progs for changing the 8 bit textures. Awful experiences. The whole texture block looked like a broken TV. Actually I have Photoshop on my hd. Is there any special color index?
